Highlights: Carmen

She lives in Seville. She’s a cigar maker who doesn’t hesitate to fight with her fellow workers. She is loved by a handsome, brooding brigadier. She hears “Avec la garde montante” and boldly sings “L’Amour est un oiseau rebelle”. She is proud, very proud… Perhaps you can guess who “she” is? It is, of course, Carmen - Georges Bizet’s dazzling heroine!

An opera in four acts with a libretto by Henri Meilhac and Ludovic Halévy, based on the novella by Prosper Mérimée, Carmen returns to the Opéra Bastille.

For the occasion, an exceptional cast. French mezzo-soprano Stéphanie d'Oustrac and Russian mezzo Victoria Karkacheva will alternate in the role of the seductive and rebellious Carmen, a woman who turns heads and stirs jealousy.
Tenors Russell Thomas and Jean‑François Borras will take turns portraying the passionate Don José, a soldier broken by love and willing to do anything for his beloved Carmen.
Bass-baritone Erwin Schrott will lend his sumptuous voice to the toreador Escamillo, Don José’s rival and the object of all his envy.

Around them, a troupe of talented singers and dancers will transport you to the heart of Spain, with its bewitching gypsies, spirited cigar makers, cunning smugglers, and flamboyant bullfighters.

Under the expert baton of Keri-Lynn Wilson, the Orchestra of the Paris National Opera will bring Bizet’s vibrant score to life, with its fiery arias, driving rhythms, and unforgettable melodies.

Don’t miss this performance, though be aware that some scenes may not be suitable for younger audiences. The production is staged by the passionate Calixto Bieito!

At the Opéra Bastille, lyrical tragedies come one after another, but none are ever quite the same — and emotion is always guaranteed.

Story: Carmen

A quick reminder for those who are not familiar with Bizet’s Carmen.

We are in Spain… in Seville, to be precise! Arrested after a fight, Carmen, a fiery-tempered gypsy, seduces Brigadier Don José, who is engaged to the gentle Micaëla, and promises him her love if he helps her escape. Don José lets Carmen go and is imprisoned in her place.

Upon his release, he finds Carmen in a tavern where she dances the Séguidille (“Près des remparts de Séville”), promising a life of passion and freedom. Despite Micaëla’s heartfelt warning in “Je dis que rien ne m’épouvante”, Don José abandons everything for Carmen. But love soon gives way to obsession. Jealous and possessive, he tries to hold on to Carmen, who, true to herself, slips away.

She then falls under the spell of Escamillo, the famous toreador, who makes a dramatic entrance to the iconic “Toreador Song”. Independent as ever, Carmen chooses Escamillo and rejects Don José, who descends into madness.

The tragedy reaches its peak during the bullfight, as Escamillo is cheered in the arena. Outside, Don José begs Carmen to return to him. She refuses. In a fit of anguish, he stabs her.

From the famous Habanera (“L’amour est un oiseau rebelle”) to the harrowing final scene, Bizet’s Carmen is a blazing opera where love and freedom clash through legendary music.

History and Fun Facts about the Opéra Bastille

Designed by Uruguayan architect Carlos Ott, the building was commissioned by French President François Mitterrand and inaugurated in 1989. For years, many had lamented the lack of a modern venue in Paris capable of welcoming modern concerts and performances with different acoustic approaches, and the flexibility that a modulable venue lends. A movement started in the 1960s called for a larger new venue in Paris that would appeal to the masses, a modern compliment to the elaborate Palais Garnier. Just over 100 years after the inauguration of the Palais Garnier, the demands finally won over the newly-elected President Mitterrand, who supported the project as the headliner among many modern works launched during his term. Selecting the popular Bastille neighbourhood for its ease of accessibility from Paris and the surrounding areas, the old Bastille Train Station was destroyed to make way for the construction of the new venue. The building was completed just in time for the bicentenary of the French Revolution.

The venue has undergone many changes in direction resulting from varying political affiliations, and has undergone major renovations since its construction to repair and to soundproof the entire structure. Unlike other auditorium designs, each and every seat at the Opéra Bastille guarantees an unrestricted view of the stage. With its white glass ceiling, crisp gray compliments, and black seating adorned with rich oak, the venue is an ode to modernity and simplistic design. From the exterior, made of blue granite from Brittany and blocks of glass, light is reflected from every corner of this angular venue.
